Santa Catalina Island has long been regarded as one of Southern California's premier vacation destinations. While the attractions on land draw thousands each year, so too do the numerous dive sites around the island. Catalina's front, or leeward side offers excellent conditions the majority of the time with clear water and virtually no wind, making it ideal for photographers and beginner divers.

The backside of Catalina also offers many excellent sites. Perhaps the most well known is the Farnsworth Bank which is a system of pinnicles. Water clarity is usually excellent at this site which is a plus for photographers looking to film the rare Purple Hydrocoral – one of the few hard corals found in cold water.
